STOP THE WORLD I WANT TO GET OFF - MCSR 3028 |

Anthony Newley’s finest moment is captured in this 1961 original cast recording of the London production of Stop The World – I Want To getOff, with Newley at his freshest and most appealing in some of the finest songs he wrote with Leslie Bricusse, including ‘Gonna build a mountain’ and ‘What kind of fool am I?’. Supported by Anna Quayle in a multitude of roles, this classic Decca album marks a period when Newley seemed the bright white hope of the British musical. As the sleeve note tells ‘In 1961 it appeared he could do no wrong, for suddenly he was centre stage alone except for a few women, in his own musical. Abrasive, sentimental, tolerably anti-establishment and layered with heavy meaningfulness, the vehicle was a barn-storming one-man musical of Cockney chirpiness and emotionally stretched introspection.’ With: Anthony Newley, Anna Quayle |
