Step into the Limelight was given two professional productions in the 1960s, and in 1969 set out gamely headed for London. It may not have arrived, but – as this disc illustrates – this is a delightful little show with a charm all of its own, and a pretty Victoriana score by that rare phenomenon in musical theatre – a female composer. Betty Lawrence was rightly proud of her music, and in the 1960s two recordings were made of it with two leading performers from the second, major, production, Josephine Gordon and Elric Hooper (now a famous actor in New Zealand). The show is based on the Crummles’ Family episodes from Charles Dickens’ Nicholas Nickleby, as the Crummles take on all theatrical challenges with their daughter the Infant Phenomenon (of uncertain age). Romantic and beguiling, this is stylish pastiche.

With; Josephine Gordon, Elric Hooper, Norman Warwick, Margaret Burton
