SET TO MUSIC: VOLUME I - MCSR 3004 |
|||||||||||||
The orchestral medley of tunes from current musicals was a favourite of recording companies from the end of the 1910s through to the 1940s. in this first volume of an on-going series, we have a collection of some of those orchestral fancies – including three scores from Jerome Kern, a brilliant example of Ivor Novello’s dance music (with the voice of Novello describing the action) and a clutch of melodies from Vivian Ellis in the music from his collaboration with A P Herbert, Big Ben. These tracks chart the progress of London musicals, and are accompanied by illuminating sleeve notes from the last surviving Gaiety Girl, Gladys Possett, written in the privacy of her nursing home. She tells not only of her theatrical memories, but of her private life, including her marriage to Sidney Possett (tobacconist and horse-whisperer). With: Orchestras of original London productions, Ivor Novello
