OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR - MCSR 3008

Acknowledged as a classic of the gramophone, this superb Decca recording of the original 1963 cast of Joan Littlewood and Theatre Workshop’s tribute to the fallen of the Great War returns to the catalogue in this newly remastered disc. This anti-war musical entertainment is as potent today as when it made its first appearance forty years ago. Using the songs of the Great War to chart its terrible story, the words used are taken from transcripts during the conflict that wiped out a generation of young men between 1914 and 1918. The cast features many of the great Theatre Royal Stratford East performers, including Murray Melvin, Brian Murphy, Avis Bunnage, Fanny Carby, Myvanwy Jenn, Mary Preston and Judy Cornwall. Later becoming a famous film, the show has no finer sound recording than this original stage version.

With: Avis Bunnage, Fanny Carby, John Gower, Victor Spinetti
