ONE OVER THE EIGHT - MCSR 3017 |

By the same team that created the smash-hit revue Pieces of Eight (also available from MCSR) the 1961 One Over the Eight proved another great success for its main writer Peter Cook and its star Kenneth Williams, running for a year in London. It was the last revue for which Cook wrote the sketches, and Williams’ farewell to revue. It also starred Sheila Hancock. The recording has at least two classic items: ‘One leg too few’ (cut before the production reached London as it was deemed potentially offensive), and ‘Hand up your sticks’ with Williams as an ineffective but successful bank-robber. Add Williams’ discourse on the delights of bird-watching, and transforming himself into a tree, and lovely musical numbers from pert Toni Eden, and you have a true revue treat. |
